So how do we transfer that weight of feeling like we are responsible to control situations that scare us? The Bible says in 2 Timothy 1:7 that “God has not given us a spirit of fear” but of “love, power and a sound mind”. A sound mind- meaning that we immediately rest in knowing HE is in control of whatever it is we are going through. I am not saying it is easy. Most certainly it is not. But here are a few things we can do to get into the practice of having a sound mind when things go awry:
-Stop. Before you start to roll that situation around in your head stop and ask God for the strength to be calm.
-Pray. Tell God what is on your heart concerning you.
-Ask for help. Ask God to help you to believe Him.
-Tell someone. Find someone you trust and that has a relationship with Christ and ask them to pray for you.
-Rest. Rest in knowing that God is the creator of the universe. If He can calm the winds and rain in a storm He can calm the worries in your heart!
Notice that telling someone about your worries is almost last in line. If you are like me my first inclination after worrying about something is to tell someone else who will worry with me. Misery loves company right? But it is so important to not give other humans the place in your life reserved for God. They cannot do anything about your situation, but God can. So ask Him for help and then ask others to pray with you.
I realize that not all those reading this will be Believers in Christ. So for those who are not used to turning to God in situations of stress, I ask you one thing. When is the last time you successfully handled a scary situation on your own? Did you feel at peace about it? When was the last time telling your friends about your situation helped you worry less? I am not condemning you, just noting that we are all human. Our first notion is to worry and grumble together. But I encourage you, the next time you are tempted to do that, just google “bible verses about fear” or “bible verses about worry”. Check out what the Bible says about these things and try to ask God for help. I am here if ever you have questions or want to talk. Just shoot me an email. Also, here are some good sources that reference fear:
Remember, God has not given us a spirit of fear. I look forward to hearing from you friends.
